Microbiology has never been more exciting and has advanced tremendously in the past 20 years alone.

It’s becoming much more rapid, as we’re developing technologies that are able to identify bacteria that cause infections in minutes instead of many hours. This is being done by detecting DNA or proteins of bacteria very quickly. I think the main advances in years to come will be in the technologies that can do this.

I also think we’re getting much better at finding out the genetic code of bacteria, which tells us a lot about them. This will lead to the discovery of many more bacteria that are out there and better treatments.

All of these advancements rely on the next generation of scientists, which could be you!
