      Yes they are!

      Small glands in your eye and above it always produce small amounts of tears to keep the eye healthy and lubricated so the eyelids move easily over the eye – this keeps it clean and removes any dust or debris that gets in there.

      We also have a bigger gland (called the lacrimal sac) under the upper eyelid which produces larger amounts of tears when we’re emotional. When we cry, tears drain out to the nose, which is why we have a runny nose when we cry!
