      Hi elliecove
Yes, I did go traveling before uni. It was fun! My parents used to love traveling and as a child also I have been to many places including the Himalaya mountains!!
Though the first time I traveled alone was a couple of years back, I went backpacking to the Alps! 🙂

      No.

I was really excited about getting to Uni, and wanted to get on with it.

I think it can be a good thing to do if you want to, but try and set some definite goals, and maybe incorporate some experiences that relate to what you’re studying.

When you go for interview at Uni, there’s a good chance you’ll get asked about what you did (or intend to do). Tell them how you’re going to be working or volunteering somewhere, and how thats going to give you insight into your chosen subject. I’d love to hear about that if I was interviewing a student for a university place, but a generic “year out” isn’t so interesting.

I didn’t either – like Ian I was VERY excited to go to University – to live in a different city and meet new people – I didn’t want to put that off by going travelling. If you want to see the world and experience backpacking, then do it by all means, but there’s always time to do it after University. You can also do placement years with science degrees where you take a year out to work and get paid – I work with someone who worked in California at a pharmaceutical company – how cool is that?! That way you get some fantastic experience that will set you apart from other graduates AND live somewhere amazing!

Yes and no. I did travel quite a lot but I didn’t go to uni until I was 24, so slightly different to most people. I left school and got a job at 16, and traveled in-between jobs. Travelling is a great option, I think most people learn a lot, but it’s not something you have to do before uni, there’s loads of time to do it later.
