People in coma’s aren’t really asleep but are unconscious – people who are sleeping can be woken, but those in coma’s can’t even be woken by pain and brain activity is low. Comas are triggered by serious injuries and are thought to happen to repair the body at a fast rate. It’s not known exactly why they happen though, or how people come out of comas.

Some comas are induced on purpose by doctors to help patients get better quicker – such as Michael Schumacher who was in a coma for 6 months after a head injury.
