Muscles are actually pretty simple, as the muscle itself can only do one thing: When you apply an electrical signal to it (normally via nerves from your brain), it contracts and tries to become shorter.

The clever it is that the muscles are attached to bones in all sorts of imaginative ways. The bones are rigid, but they’re attached together at joints. When you want to move your arm, your brain sends an electrical signal telling the muscle to contract, and because of the way the bones and joints are arranged in your elbow, your hand has to move!
