• Question: What type of poison is on poisons frogs such as the poison arrow frog? And is there a way to use it to heal some diseases or is it too poisonous?

      The toxins these frogs secrete is called a neurotoxin – one that stops our nerve cells from transmitting impulses causing our muscles to stop working (paralysis), heart failure and death if not treated.

      There’s no specific treatment for poisons from these frogs, but you can be given other toxins or drugs that help stop the poison from acting on the nerve cell, so nerve impulses are not stopped completely.

      To add to Naomi’s answer, its precisely because they’re so nasty that they’re interesting to study for medical purposes.

      If they can do that much damage, then they’re accessing some part of brain activity very directly. If that mechanism is understood, then the same chemicals could be used in lower doses to regulate that part of the brain if its having problems for some other reason.
