      Hi ellemay

The outer layer of the skin is made up of dead cells that contain a protein called keratin. Now when we are immersed in water, these cells absorb water and causes the skin to swell, and to compensate for the rise in surface area our skin wrinkles! Compared to the other parts of the body our hands and toes have a thick skin with more keratin that absorbs more water. that is the reason, only the extremities swell up and not the other parts of the body.
