We’re still working out why we dream and have nightmares – our brain is the most complex organ to understand! It’s thought we have nightmares as a evolutionary mechanism to warn us of potential dangers. It could be a way of our brain dealing with subconscious fears or worries and although we dream every night, barely remembering them the next day, with nightmares we get anxious waking us up as they happen, making them seem more vivid.

It’s thought certain foods increase brain activity and the likelihood of having a nightmares, such as cheese.
